Treasure Chest Thursday - A rock?

What's so special about a rock?      Why do we have it?

This rock is special. It belonged to a 6 year old boy, who left his home country in 1923 with his father.   Of all the things he might have brought with him across the ocean, we have this rock.

This rock belonged to my Grandfather, William Patrick Bellew.   When he left England his mother and two brothers remained behind for a few years.  When I hold it I imagine a young boy, with it in his pocket...  this rather large rock from home. Boarding a huge ship for another country, and holding onto somthing to remember the place he came from.  What surprises me more is that he kept it all his life and my Grandmother has passed it to my mom.

A young boy's "treasure", and now ours.

  1. Wow, that's really something that he was able to carry it across the ocean with him and that your family was able to preserve it for all these years!

  2. What a great story and what a treasure to have in your family. So many keepsakes get lost over the years and it's nice to know that this one is cared for.

  3. It is amazing that the rock has been kept and not accidently thrown out. I suppose the family talked about it enough so that everyone was aware of it in probably it's special place.

I love this story. It's probably what I would have done. I had one pictured as one a little guy maybe had in his pocket. But it seems larger.
    Great story.

  4. That certainly is a treasure and how fortunate for everyone in your family that it is recognized as something other than "just a rock." I have a jar of sea shells from visits to the U.K. with my mother and several rocks from special trips with my family so I can really relate to your family's treasure. Thanks for sharing.
